The root canal and its pulp chamber is a hollow within a tooth, in which nerve tissue, blood vessels and other cellular entities are located. This dental procedure, also referred to as endodontic treatment, treats the infection in the root canal system caused by bacteria that contaminates tooth when it is damaged, when decay occurs or if fillings leak. Removing of this bacteria is done by either tooth extraction or root canal treatment. In this treatment, firstly, the dentist opens the teeth through its crown, then the root canal is thoroughly cleaned and shaped so it can be easily filled. This procedure takes place during one or more two visits. Patient often choose to be desensitized. The two-visit treatment involves putting a special medication that removes the remaining bacteria. Once the tooth is cleaned and the medication is removed, the dentist proceeds to filling the tooth which protect is from further infection. As root-filled teeth are weaker and break easily, Crowns are often recommended to make it stronger. Moreover, these teeth are often discoloured after the treatment, therefore internal bleaching may be applied (devitalised teeth whitening from the inside).
